The Passé Composé — Agreement with Avoir (COD Before the Verb)

In French, past participle agreement with Avoir is possible and is a common source of confusion.

The key is that agreement only happens under a very specific condition.

The Big Idea: Agreement with Avoir

  • With Avoir, the past participle does not agree with the subject.
  • Instead, it agrees with the direct object (COD) only if the COD comes before the verb.

Examples

FrenchEnglishExplanation
J’ai mangé la pomme.I ate the apple.COD “la pomme” comes afterno agreement
La pomme que j’ai mangée.The apple that I ate.COD “que” comes beforeagreement with “la pomme” (feminine singular)
Je l’ai mangée.I ate it.COD “l’” comes beforeagreement (feminine singular)

How to Spot It Quickly

  1. Identify the direct object (COD).

  2. Ask: Is the COD before the auxiliary?

    • Yes → make the past participle agree with the COD.
    • No → no agreement.

Key Points

  • Past participle with Avoir = usually invariable.
  • Agreement happens only if COD is placed before the verb.
  • Agreement is with the COD, not the subject.
Important Note 1

Not sure if a past participle ends with s, t, or nothing? Use the Feminine Trick: imagine the word in its feminine form to "hear" the hidden consonant.

  • Prendre (to take) → Is it prise? Yes! → ends in s (pris).
  • Écrire (to write) → Is it écrite? Yes! → ends in t (écrit).
  • Vendre (to sell) → Is it vendue? Yes! → ends in u (vendu).
Important Note 2

With Avoir, you only agree with the Direct Object (COD) if it is placed BEFORE the verb.

  • No Agreement: J'ai mangé les pommes. (The apples are after the verb).
  • Agreement: Les pommes que j'ai mangées. (The apples are before the verb).

Key Takeaways

  • Regular rule: Avoir → no agreement with the subject

  • Exception: COD before the verb → agree with COD

  • Examples:

    • J’ai mangé la pomme → no agreement
    • La pomme que j’ai mangée → agree (feminine singular)
    • Je l’ai mangée → agree (feminine singular)
