Third Group — -OIR Verbs (The Modals)

Some -oir verbs form a special category in French.

They are grouped together because they:

  • Play an essential grammatical role
  • Are usually followed by another verb
  • Are highly irregular

These are commonly called modal verbs.

The four key verbs are:

  • pouvoir → can / to be able to
  • vouloir → to want
  • devoir → must / to have to
  • savoir → to know how

Why They Are a Special Category

Although they belong to the -oir family, these verbs are unique because of their function in sentences.

They rarely stand alone.

Instead, they are almost always followed by:

another verb in the infinitive

Examples:

  • Je veux manger → I want to eat
  • Tu dois partir → You must leave
  • Nous pouvons venir → We can come

This structure is extremely common in everyday French.
